Finding The Hero Within

So few people in this world take the time to help others.  We are so consumed with our own lives, that we don't take the time to see other people.  There's a need for heroes in our modern world of internet, cell phones and entertainment.  It seems that, as a society, we have lost our way.  We've forgotten that there is indeed suffering in this world.  We are not alone, even though it can sometimes feel that way.  There are people in this world who are hungry, homeless and in distress.  I know you may be asking yourself,  "What can I, as a person, do to fix such a big problem?"

I do have a suggestion or solution, if you will.  It isn't really rocket science or brain surgery, truthfully, it can be rather easy if we try.  All I am suggesting is that people make a concerted effort to help at least one person.  There are many ways we can do this.  We could give some spare change to that homeless person we pass everyday on our way to the bus stop.  We can call the police when we hear our neighbor beating his wife, instead of going back to sleep or turning up the televsion .  Not everyone has to don a costume to be a hero.

I believe that before 9/11, we as a people weren't really clear on the definition of a hero.  That day changed our outlook on life.  Suddenly, the heroes ceased to be athletes and celebrities and become firefighters and the police.  These are the people that protect us everyday and we completely over looked them.  Why do you think there's been a sudden resurgence of superhero movies and interest in superheroes?  They are everywhere we look.

The world needs heroes.  We have always needed them and we always will.  They give us hope and maybe something to believe in.  Everyone can be a hero of one type or another, all it takes is a small amount of effort.

I'm not telling everyone to don a costume and fight injustice from beneath an assumed identity.  I do encourage those with the desire to become a superhero, to definately do it.  All others, I urge to become heros in their own way.

So, are you a hero or a victim?  The choice is yours.
